Considering the very fact the prices of college textbooks are skyrocketing these days, we all have been watching a significant rise in the prices with every passing day. Every year, new versions come and they are sold at a much higher price than that of the previous versions. This has been one of the main reasons why the cost of attending college has now become overwhelmingly very high. However, you will be glad to know that there are still several alternative ways out there, which you use thoroughly, can help you save a great deal of money in this regard. Following is a brief rundown on how to buy these books at cheap prices and eventually save on college expenses.

Buy Older Edition, If Possible

Look at the kind of books you need for your classes and ask your professor if an older edition of the college textbooks will do. If they say yes, you can go ahead and buy the old edition books and save some good bucks. A year old edition does not have much difference as compared to the latest one. If you have friends or acquaintances who have already taken the course and the books you need are just sitting around with them, you may like to borrow the books from them.

Compare Prices At Bookstores With The Online Prices

Do not buy the books directly from your college bookstores. You had better first take down the price list from there and then compare the same with the online prices. In most cases, you are very much likely to get heavy discounts if you buy your books online, as there are many places on Internet that sell college textbooks at a much reasonable price as compared to the prices charged by the college bookstores.

Rent Your Textbook

Another good alternative is to rent your textbooks instead of buying the same. It is probably the cheapest option available for you. The best thing about renting books is that once your course is complete, the books will not be sitting around.

Become A Library Member And Get Books From There

There might be many books in the list that you may require for your course, but you probably will not be using all of them frequently. If that is the case, you may save your money by not buying the book at the first place. You can borrow it from your college library. But, this strategy works only for those books that you use rarely because libraries often have limited stocks of a particular book and they lend only college textbooks for a short period of time.

Buy Used College Books

Many bookstores and websites sell used books at a significantly much cheaper price as compared to the price charged for the new ones. The content of the book however is not different, and thus is in no sense less valuable than the new one. So, this can be a good option for you.

There are array of ways to save money significantly on college textbooks and cut down the cost of attending college

Many adult ESL learners are often afraid of making a mistake when it comes to communicating in a second or foreign language and as a result, remain silent. Often this trepidation comes from fearing being corrected. Now teachers can use the knowledge of error correction to engage adult ESL learners more effectively.

the focus nowadays in an ESL classroom should be on communicative competence. This goes with the expectations that learners should be understood by primarily on what they say and then by the accuracy of how they say it.

Errors should only be corrected by teacher when the learner is linguistically ready to accept the correction. There have been several studies regarding this topic and the end result is that basically this topic does not focus on the theoretical implications but rather what is considered “practical” for language development. The main conclusions are that certain types of errors are much more likely to be treated than others: discourse, content, and lexical errors receive more attention than phono-logical or grammatical errors. (Ellis 585)

There are many learner errors that should not be treated or regarded important on behalf of the learner. Sometimes, language teachers think students’ errors are fossilized and therefore, they do not know how to treat them. Some teachers correct errors when errors have not even been made. (Ellis 585) There is a wide gap between the general consensus of how errors should be treated and what is regarded as “linguistically advantageous” for the second language learner with regard to his or her inter-language or, the target language that is in process of being formally acquired.

When teachers are consistent with regard to their correction of learner errors, then the chances of learners becoming more sensitive to how they express themselves in the classroom will be stronger. Given the inconsistent facts regarding error treatment, “this might suggest that error treatment is often not successful, but it is possible that by raising learners’ consciousness it contributes to acquisition in the long run” (Ellis 586). the purpose of correcting errors should be used only in cases when it is beneficial for the learners’ understanding of the material.

A good ESL teacher is one who can provide the tools for the language learner so that she or he becomes more linguistically and semantically aware of the language being used when communicating with others. Therefore, helping the students become aware of his/her errors is much more conductive to helping adult ESL learners acquire a second language because they are constructing their understanding of the second language as they become more aware of the nuances and idiosyncracies of learning a second language.

As one of the foremost economies in the world despite the recession, Canada has become one of the best places that expats and other travelers go to in recent years. With the influx of immigrants, the economy continues to flourish. In order to keep up with the burgeoning economy, studying in Canada has become one way that new experts and workers easily provide the supply of warm bodies for the economic growth.

The land mass and geographic diversity of Canada has allowed it an almost unlimited supply of natural resources to fuel the continued growth and economic development. As the economy grows, the demand for expert skilled workers becomes greater and with a population that is slow to provide the experts, the government has turned to foreign workers and students to fill the need. That is why studying in Canada has become one of the worlds best locations to overcome the current financial crisis.

The other aspect of being educated in Canada is the high cost of matriculation and living expenses for its fruition. Not all educational institutions though have scholarships to provide deserving but financially handicapped students. To others given the opportunity to study, they need to find jobs to augment their finances to remain in school. And teaching in Canada has become one of the options for financial support in the country.

The problem though in pursuing teaching as a means of income in Canada is the lack of permanent positions available for anyone with the credentials to do so. In the highly urbanized areas of the country, there is an oversupply of teachers for the school system while there is a disparity when it comes to the more remote areas of the country. Since most of the higher educational institutions are located in the cities, teaching as a means of livelihood and a means of making school payments is not a viable option. The reality was portrayed in a post saying that “however, unlike countries such as the UK, the number of private schools in relation to the number of state schools is very low although with the expat community continuing to grow on an annual basis we could and should see an increase in the number of private schools in Canada.”

So in order to be able to continue studying in Canada, teaching should be one of the first to search for but least expected to bear fruit. Other job options need to be explored in order to be able to find funds for both schooling and everyday expenses. In fact, teaching in Canada is not one of the vocations that ranks in the summary of skilled workers required in Canada. There are many immigrants who have the necessary credentials who cannot find jobs within Canada that provide a venue to practice their pedagogical expertise.

So if you are studying in Canada and with the many other positions and professions in demand, you can find other means to eke out a living for your daily expenses. It is recommended though that you be on the lookout for teaching positions that open up, so long as you have the mandatory three years experience together with your education and other credentials. The ideal set up would be a student having a day job teaching but with the current climate, it is best that you seek other jobs while awaiting the ideal set up to materialize.

Have you been considering the decision to quit teaching? As a teacher, this thought goes around in my mind every time I check exams, attend an administration meeting, or try learning a new task. But then again, it has been years, and I am still hooked on it.

Many teachers have noted and even stressed how small the salary of a teacher is – even if you have your masters degree or even doctorate degree. Compared to those who work in Corporate America, your salary as a teacher reall is very low. But guess what? In spite of this, there are some things you will really love about teaching that you just can’t find anywhere else. Allow me to stress some reasons why not to quit teaching.

Reason #1: Meeting new people. Students come and go. Every year, every semester, new students walk into your classroom. This is a regular cycle, and a blessing for any teacher because you get to know new faces, discover new personalities, and gain new friends. Since our environment is so diverse and in constant change, we can’t deny that teachers have the largest circle of fans and friends. Imagine having 40 new members in your class every year or every semester. Over a few years, that becomes a few hundred – and much more when you stay even longer in the profession. Even more so, some of these students will never forget you and will continuously consider you as one of their teachers.

Reason #2: Profession like no other. It has been said in history and by the wise that teaching is the most noble profession of all. Indeed it is true. You have been given a task to mold children into what they want and what they can be. They are allowing you to change and carve them into a form suitable for society. Teachers are responsible for other professions like doctors, engineers, scientists and the like. Without them, other professions would not exist. Great men and women in history are teachers. They imparted their knowledge to others. And that has created many beautiful reward on earth.

Reason #3: Dynamic environment. Even when teaching the same subject, educators always find themselves imparting new lessons and topics to their students. There is a constant challenge to improve and learn more. Our job is not stationary, for we need to change our ways of teaching to suit the new generation of learners. Therefore, we are always digesting information and more knowledge to improve the profession. This makes it very challenging. Additionally, our job is not routine and boring like other work. We have seminars every now and then, new book editions to read, new lectures to deliver, and new students to talk to.

These are only a handful of ideas that make teaching so nice, and they are core reasons for any teachers to stick with it in spite of the low salary and compensation. At the twilight of our lives, we will not be counting how much we earned or invested, but instead how many lives we affected and changed. Knowing that, will you still quit teaching?

One of the things that many college freshmen suffer from is a lack of happiness. You may not think that others can see it, but it shows. I work with young adults all of the time who are, in some way, feeling that something is lacking or that they wish they had other skills, traits, abilities, things… Is this you?

I have learned that the answer to this problem is to handle the situations in your life as the personthat you want to be would handle them. If you acted like that person, you will be able to concentrate on your strengths and focus on those. Then you will be able to compensate for the weakness you feel that you have. When you do this, it will be easier to see those areas that you want to develop in your own character and take the action steps necessary to make those changes.

Do you question your decisions, making it difficult to be truly “happy?” Let the “me in the present” be validated in the decision you have made. Decide you will not be disappointed in your current choices, knowing that you have made the best possible choices at this time with the information that you have. Act like the person you want to be – confident of your choices and without regret.

Part of being happy is to like yourself and your decisions. Your self-esteem will increase and you will find that it is easier to set and achieve realistic goals when you trust yourself and like who you are enough to move forward.

Be optimistic. It isn’t always easy, but it makes a difference in your body awareness, your actions, your energy for taking on new tasks, and the limitations that you do or do not set for yourself. Pay attention to the types of music you listen to, the books you read, the movies you watch. Choose things that will build you up and encourage the optimism that you are seeking so that you can become the person you envision.

Another tool for happiness is to be active. When you are actively involved in things that you enjoy, time has no limitations – you are in FLOW! Flow is the things that you do that when you do them time just seems to pass, hours feel like minutes. You could enjoy that activity endlessly. Look for ways to add these activities into your day.

Also, stay in control. When you stay in control, there is a balance to your life. You are better equipped to respond to events as opposed to react. A response involves maintaining control and is usually a planned and timely action. A reaction is unplanned and unpredictable, and usually sets off a chain reaction that has consequences that are regrettable and out of control.

Volunteering is an excellent way to increase happiness and almost always benefits the volunteer as well as the recipient. Get involved at school, pitch in and help, join committees and make a difference!

Lastly, resolve those inner conflicts. For example, either lose those last ten pounds or, be happy and content with the body and weight that you have. Wasting time on the struggle is counterproductive to the changes you are making in other areas.

College life can be over whelming and confusing the first few months, make sure your teen is equipped to sustain their feelings of joy and confidence. Don’t leave this to chance, work with them now to develop their sense of personal awareness and help them to foster these attitudes and behaviors.

Interesting reading in today’s national newspaper! The current government opposition party, hoping that they’re predicting what the electorate want, are promising a crackdown on discipline in schools and say they will declare war on ‘yobbery’. They claim that children’s behaviour has got progressively worse, with over 3.5 million days lost in children’s education in the last 5 years due to exclusions.

They promise to put school discipline at the top of the political agenda when they get elected into government — well they hope they’ll get elected. Time will tell on that one…

Of course, the other lot claim that everything’s hunky dory and that the debate on children’s behaviour is all a great big fuss about nothing — they claim that behaviour in schools has improved… Try convincing a vast number of people about that, Mr Minister!

But, whatever the rights or wrongs of the political parties’ arguments there is a fundamental problem that goes beyond giving schools and teachers the extra powers to control the appalling behaviour of many children. In fact, schools and teachers have sufficient powers to deal with problem behaviour already. So why aren’t they using the powers?

Well, that’s where we come to the problem that needs to be addressed before any proposed further powers can benefit teachers and the majority of children who are perfectly well behaved, but whose education is frequently impaired and disrupted by the bad behaviour of others.

So, what’s the problem?

However much the government, schools, parents and even children want behaviour to improve in schools it can’t happen because the adults who are responsible for carrying out the task of dealing with the behaviour problems haven’t the skills and knowledge to do so.

Adults across society have lost their way when it comes to disciplining children. They’ve been undermined and given so much inaccurate advice over a long time, leaving them unsure, lacking confidence and sometimes even frightened to tackle children’s bad behaviour.

What’s needed then? Education — for the adults. They need to learn or relearn what they need to do to deal with behaviour problems, ideally to prevent the bad behaviour from happening in the first place. Is it possible to do this? It certainly is and it’s not difficult. Anyone can learn to manage children’s behaviour without a problem.

Most adults instinctively know that they should be in control of children’s behaviour and soon change their behaviour when they’re taught the basic skills of effective behaviour management and start to confidently use the techniques. Confidence quickly kicks in and replaces uncertainty. People know sense when they hear it… For too long they’ve been given information and ‘advice’ about dealing with children that’s at odds with that which they know has worked for generations.

Allowing and encouraging adults to act as adults, disciplining children in a way that encourages them to mature into healthy, confident youths and adults is vital for the improvement of education standards and behaviour standards throughout society.

There are many ways to improve your math grades. Here we will discuss three of the top ways to achieve better grades in math classes.

1. The first way to see grades improve is to actively engage yourself in the class. Make sure you show up on time with all the supplies you will need for class like notebooks and pencils; also bring any other supplies the instructor may require such as rulers or protractors.

2. While present in class take good notes. Copy anything the teacher writes on the board whether it is fully understood or not. Notes can be a valuable tool when studying independently.

Another way to improve math scores is practice. Even after completing all assigned problems, go back and work as many other problems as possible.

Most math textbooks have answers to the odd numbered problems in the back of the book.

Work all the examples in the lesson and the odd numbered problems on your own and compare your answer with the correct one. When you successfully get the correct answer you have worked the problem properly.

Check your process with any examples to ensure the steps are done correctly. A math problem cannot be done too many times; practice is a key to improvement.

3. Finally, read the corresponding lessons in the math text. Underline and memorize key concepts that are being covered. Carefully read and work through examples that may be used in the text.

For most students, particularly younger students still in school, the SSAT exam is a big deal. It is the important test that dictates whether or not theyll be accepted into their private school of choice. Lots of student though have the wrong idea about studying but here we aim to set student off on the right track by providing them optimum SSAT study tips to help them ace the exam. Because afte rall, preparation is half of the battle.

Sleep and Relaxation

For young mind sleep is one of the most important factors. It helps your brain shut down and your mind switch off for a while. If you’ve ever heard of students being ‘burnt out’ from study its most likely because they have not been getting the proper amount of rest. The SSAT is no difference, study hard sure but remember that sleep and occasional relaxing time are just as important.

Eat Healthy

Sugar and most forms of junk food are bad for concentration and study. Eating bad food makes it harder to concentrate and retain information. Imagine studying for a few hours only to remember nothing the next day. This is entirely possible in the SSAT study program if you aren’t eating well.

Stress

Stress can be evident in young children just as much as adults. Lots of parents work their children into a frenzy by placing too much importance on the exams. Sure, the exams are very important and a good mark is crucial. But its possible to get this across without the student feeling like their world will end if they do badly.

If they have been working hard reward them with a day out or a movie. This is a great factor in relieving stress.

Practice Questions

The format of the SSAT is unlike lots of other tests for younger students. In order to study effectively they should become familiar with the test format by taking as many practice questions as possible.

In order to get top grades its important to work on the best system. There are limited spots but you an check out the internets most popular SSAT study and prep system.

Fact checking is an important part of writing an accurate article. Meticulous authors do research prior to committing their thoughts to paper. Not all authors are so careful. Editors and readers serve society and themselves well when they read with a judicious eye. Just because a piece is written and printed does not necessarily make it true. The ability to check facts, coupled with an openness to a possible bias on the part of an author, will enable the discernment of truth or distortion.

Editors have a responsibility to fact check before printing an article or book. Some editors do this very well. Others do not. If you are an editor, the tips below could help you produce better articles thereby building a reputation as a reliable source.

Readers could benefit from these tips by being able to ascertain whether what they are reading is actually true, elaborations on truth, or, just plain inaccurate. In these days of information being rapidly accessed on the Internet where anyone can publish anything, it is vital to know how to pick out what is factual information and what is not. Readers should be aware that facts can be twisted or interpreted incorrectly also, that they can be used as the basis to support a poorly reasoned conclusion. So the fact could be correct, but the logic used to support a particular argument could be defective. This article does not address how to pick out faulty logic.

The Process of Fact Checking. Here is a sequence of steps to follow in fact checking. If you are writing for publication or academic purposes, you will want to do the final step of recording what you find. If you are fact checking for your own edification, this step may not be important to you.

a. Read the material.
b. Read the material a second time, marking passages for checking.
c. Write down the claims to check and list keywords and potential resources to research.
d. Do the research.
e. Record results including the source.

Who is the Author? The first thing to determine is the qualifications of the author. Experts writing in their field may be given credit as more likely to be knowledgeable and accurate. However, the author may harbor a bias. The use of inflammatory language is one overt clue to bias. The use of subtle innuendo is a covert one. Check for degrees, certifications, awards, and years of experience. Next, look for evidence of due diligence by the author. Are sources listed for claims made? Did the author do original research?

Is the Source trustworthy? In the case of an editor or author, a “source” would be those references used by the author to support his argument. In the case of a reader, “source” also includes the author of the material. Sources should be reliable, knowledgeable, and unbiased in order to be trustworthy. Ask yourself these questions.

a. Is the source reliable? Each fact used in a publication needs to come from a reliable source. Authors who list their sources help make your research easier because you can check the source directly and you can make a determination whether that source has provided information in the past which turned out to be accurate. The more well-known the institution or research agency which generated the original information, the more likely it is that the information is reliable. Institutions and research agencies not only do primary research, they also tend to do peer reviews of information prior to its release, and many other interested parties carefully scrutinize their work once it has been released.

b. Is the source knowledgeable? Look for sources which have credentials in the area of expertise from which the claim emanates. For example, in the case of medical claims, check with organizations and agencies like the National Institutes of Health or the Centers for Disease Control or individuals who have medical degrees. Look for years of related experience and published research. People who have worked at or studied a subject extensively have more understanding of their topic.

c. Is the source unbiased? Independent laboratories and agencies are the most likely source for unbiased information. Who funds cited research projects? Unfortunately, funding often seems tied to the outcome of the research. Research funded by organizations with significant monetary stakes in the outcome of the research should be viewed with healthy skepticism.

If the author did not list his sources, then more work is required to determine whether the source was reliable. Assessing source reliability is most difficult when the source is listed as a “well-placed source” or “an anonymous source”, or some equally unspecific citing is given. In those cases, treat the information as possibly suspect. Two methods can be pursued at this point. Wait to see how events play out before deciding to treat the information as true or search for collaboration or refutation of the claim from other sources.

Search the Internet with care. Just because you find something on the Internet does not make it true. Many blogs, newsletters, and articles are not well edited, not reviewed for accuracy, and do not follow journalistic standards. One of the most common mistakes is assuming that because something appears on the Internet, especially if it occurs multiple times, it is true. Since many authors just restate what they read somewhere else without checking the facts, readers can see multiple iterations of inaccurate information. Remember to verify the source. Find the originator of the information and assess their trustworthiness.

If you are researching political statements, you might wish to check FactCheck.org which specializes in researching the issues which appear on the political scene. Other websites which provide more consistently edited and reviewed information include Wikipedia, sites ending with “.gov”, and major newspapers.

Ask a Subject Matter Expert. As an editor, I occasionally run across something for which it is difficult to find an answer. I turn to experts by searching on the Internet and then send an e-mail request for assistance. Depending on the subject, I might ask college professors, coaches, or whatever other category of expert applies. I provide a short description of my question and ask for their help. I usually send up to five requests which increases my chances of getting at least one response. This has been a successful strategy. I always send a “thank you”!

Ask a Research Librarian. If you are at a loss for how to check a piece of information, ask your local research librarian. They are well-versed in research techniques and authoritative publications, government, and Internet sources and can refer you to appropriate material in their own reference section.

Check with the Library of Congress. You can also use the vast resources of the Library of Congress to check on the accuracy of information. Their online “Ask a Librarian” program lets you submit a request for information and their librarians will research the issue and e-mail a response.

Fact checking is worth the effort. Editors will improve the trustworthiness of their publication by ensuring the facts are well-supported and accurate. Readers will be confident about understanding issues and making sound decisions when they know the facts presented are true.
