When I finally left college after three years, 3 A levels, 6 AS levels and an access course I couldn’t imagine going to university for another 3 years. I had already spent 14 years in education and I felt like I was ready to get a job and earn some real money.

I had never thought about doing an online degree until I started to notice how many times online university qualifications popped up in CV’s that were sent to me in job applications. I already owned and ran a successful company that I had built up over the years with hard work, dedication and without the aid of a degree even though many of my employees were actually more academically qualified than I was. As I came from a poor family it was unthinkable that I would have gone to university when I was younger.

The first big decision I made when I left college was that I wasn’t going to go to university. I was sick of being in education and the thought of attending another class or lecture filled me with a wet cloud of depression.

Well it’s my last year of university and I am looking forward to completing my degree with good grades, a wealth of knowledge behind me and a good outlook on the future. After I get my results I am going to meet my fellow students where we will celebrate with a few drinks and a celebratory meal.

The cost of going to university to obtain a degree costing upwards of £3000 a year alongside the progression of technology and the internet should inevitably result in less people opting to take traditional campus degrees and more people deciding to add to their qualifications online. The concept of an online university and what it can offer is broadening with users being able to watch and listen to live lectures, navigate virtual classrooms and even chat to their lecturers and classmates during ‘lessons’ to compare notes or even organise social meetings.
